Man tried to light fire in Austin gas station with employee inside | FOX 7 Austin
SUMMARY: On Tuesday afternoon, law enforcement officers converged on the Texico gas station in southeast Austin after spotting a stolen car. The driver fled into the store, where officers saw the suspect with a gun and ordered him to drop it. The suspect refused, prompting officers to back out. One employee escaped, but another was trapped. The SWAT team and additional agencies responded as the suspect, holding a gun and pouring lighter fluid, made suicidal threats. Negotiators and pepper ball rounds failed to resolve the situation. The suspect fired at officers and made an incendiary device, posing an imminent threat, leading officers to shoot him. The suspect died at the hospital, and the trapped employee was safely rescued.
Austin police said the driver of a stolen car went into a store, tried to light a fire while employees were inside, and refused to come out in southeast Austin.

Uvalde school shooting: Families of victims get $2 million settlement with city | FOX 7 Austin
SUMMARY: Nearly two years after the tragic mass shooting at Robb Elementary School, the families of the victims have reached a $2 million settlement with the city of Uvalde. While no amount can compensate for the lost lives, families emphasize justice and accountability. The settlement is funded by the city’s insurance to prevent financial strain on the community. As part of the agreement, Uvalde police will undergo new fitness and training standards, and the city will establish an annual remembrance day and mental health support services. Families also plan to sue the state, criticizing Texas DPS for their delayed response during the tragedy.
Ahead of the anniversary, the families of the children who were murdered are suing the state and DPS troopers over the more than an hour-long delay in confronting the gunman.

Dashcam video shows Fort Worth electrician’s work truck struck by lightning
SUMMARY: Last week, a North Texas electrician, Garrett Beck, encountered a startling incident when lightning struck his work truck. Beck and his coworker Jeff Baker were driving on Interstate 35 when they heard a loud boom and saw sparks, followed by the truck malfunctioning. Initially thought to be a collision, the lightning strike was later confirmed through dash cam footage posted on social media by another driver. The strike damaged the truck’s ladder rack and shut down the vehicle, but fortunately, neither Beck nor Baker were injured. Beck humorously wished the odds favored winning the lottery instead; the likelihood of a lightning strike is 1 in 1.2 million.
Garrett Beck is a Fort Worth-based electrician. But nothing from his experience prepared him for what happened last week. “I wish it was on a lottery ticket and not getting struck by lightning.”
