American Airlines backtracks after lawyers blame girl, 9, for not seeing hidden camera in bathroom
SUMMARY: American Airlines is addressing backlash over a recent court filing where its attorneys appeared to blame a 9-year-old girl for not realizing she was being secretly recorded in an airplane restroom. Flight attendant Estus Carter Thompson III was arrested and indicted for recording young girls in restrooms during flights. Court documents revealed victims aged 7 to 14. Families of two victims, aged 9 and 14, are suing Thompson and American Airlines. Initially, the airline's defense suggested the 9-year-old should have known about the recording. Following public outrage, American Airlines stated this was a filing error by their legal team and clarified the child is not at fault.
The airline's attorneys wrote in an answer to the lawsuit involving the 9-year-old from Austin, “She knew or should have known [the compromised lavatory] contained a visible and illuminated recording device.” But now, the airline says its outside legal counsel “made an error in the filing.”

Surveillance footage captured the crime, which has severely impacted the dance studio just days before a national competition. The stolen trailer contained essential props for the dance routines, and its absence is a significant setback. Brent Stevenson's daughter dances at the studio, and he was the last to see the trailer after a recital on Sunday. The sheriff's office only has a partial license plate of the suspect's truck.
