Road closures planned for CapTex Tri race on Memorial Day

SUMMARY: Bikers, swimmers, and runners will converge in downtown Austin on Memorial Day for the 2024 Ascension Seton CapTex Tri triathlon. The event will result in numerous road closures and detours from 4 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday. Alternative routes include the MoPac Expressway, Lamar Boulevard, and Interstate 35 for north-south traffic, while Riverside Drive, Barton Springs Road, 11th Street, and 15th Street are suggested for east-west travel. Congress Avenue will have lane reductions, so expect delays. Races start at 7 a.m. More information is available online.

Friar Point fatal fire: 7-year-old boy dead, grandmother hospitalized after fatal house fire in Houston, fire crews say

SUMMARY: A 7-year-old boy has died and his grandmother is hospitalized following a house fire on Houston’s south side. Firefighters arrived on the 3000 block of Friar Point at 3:30 p.m. Saturday to find the house engulfed in flames. Six people were inside: a mother, grandmother, and four children aged 4 to 9. The boy succumbed to the fire while the grandmother suffered second-degree burns but is expected to recover. The rest of the family was uninjured but traumatised. Firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire and the boy’s death. One firefighter partially fell through the roof but is unharmed.
