UT Austin Palestine protests: University clarifies ‘confusing’ messaging | FOX 7 Austin
SUMMARY: Protesters at a university were given flyers stating that students arrested for criminal trespassing couldn’t come to campus, even though many charges were dropped and the arrests were deemed unlawful. The university later clarified that the notice was a courtesy to inform students of potential consequences. On another occasion, 55 people were arrested during a protest, with charges later dropped. The university president criticized the protesters for including non-affiliated individuals in the protest. Faculty members criticized the aggressive police response, urging the university to refrain from pursuing criminal charges or disciplinary actions against peaceful protesters. Despite fear, protesters plan to continue their activities.
UT is clarifying its messaging following the arrests of protesters earlier this week.

When local newspapers shrink or shutter, it leaves a gap in news access that other local news outlets struggle to fill, causing news deserts — communities without reliable local news sources. Texans in news deserts struggle to navigate misinformation and often grow to mistrust the media and other institutions.
On Thursday, May 9, The Texas Tribune hosted “We the Texans: Local news and democracy,” as part of our yearlong initiative examining the state of democracy in Texas. In this solutions-focused conversation, Nic Garcia, the Tribune's regions editor, talks with media experts and community leaders about the challenges local communities face and what can be done to ensure Texans across the state have access to reliable local news.
Speakers include:
Mitch Borden, Permian Basin reporter, Marfa Public Radio
Patrick Canty, publisher, Odessa American
Benjamin Toff, assistant professor, Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communications, University of Minnesota

Expect a summer of teacher turnover and more job cuts for Houston ISD
SUMMARY: Houston Independent School District had to close a $450 million budget gap for next year without impacting the classroom. Despite this effort, dozens of teachers and principals are being laid off due to bad budgeting practices, including using emergency relief money for recurring expenses. Teachers are not being let go because of the budget gap, but for other reasons such as performance. The district is confident they can replace the non-renewed educators with trained and experienced staff. The decision-making process for letting go of employees is based on various factors, with notifications already being sent out to those affected.
Expect a lot of teacher turnover this summer in Houston ISD. And more job cuts are coming for other staff, including custodial and maintenance workers.
