SUMMARY: The City of Dallas's proposal to fund the Dallas Police and Fire pension includes delaying cost of living increases for retirees for over 20 years. The plan seeks to maintain pension sustainability without overburdening taxpayers, ramping up city funding over five years. Councilwoman Cara Mendelsohn advocates for a more aggressive funding approach. One option is to call an election to let voters decide on a tax to cover the shortfall. The proposal adds $17-20 million annually for five years and includes incremental benefit increases tied to the fund's performance. The pension is currently 39% funded and is not expected to reach 70% until 2046.

The City of Dallas' proposal to fund the Dallas Police and Fire pension would delay cost of living increases for retirees for the next few decades.
