Woman sentenced after paying hitman in Bitcoin
SUMMARY: A North Texas woman was sentenced to nine years in federal prison for using cryptocurrency to enlist someone to murder her romantic rival. Michelle Murphy paid $110,000 in Bitcoin to someone on the dark web for the alleged hit, but the plot was never carried out. Law enforcement agencies are becoming more sophisticated in investigating cyber crimes, even on the dark web. This case, investigated by the Dallas field office of Homeland Security Investigations, highlights the use of cryptocurrency in criminal activities. Despite the assumption that transactions on the dark web are untraceable, authorities were able to track down and prosecute Murphy for her murder-for-hire scheme.
