Legendary Fort Worth basketball coach dies

SUMMARY: Legendary Fort Worth high school basketball coach Robert Hughes has passed away at 96. Hughes holds the record for most wins by any basketball coach in the U.S., with over 1,300 victories, five state championships, and 35 division titles. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017, Hughes's influence extended beyond sports; he served as a father figure and mentor to many of his players, predominantly African-American young men. Starting his career at I.M. Terrell High in 1958 and moving to Dunbar High in 1973, his legacy is celebrated throughout the Fort Worth community.

A legendary Fort Worth high school basketball coach has died. Coach Robert Hughes won more high school boys basketball games than any other coach in the country.

Woman arrested for stealing van with corpse inside

SUMMARY: A woman, Valerie Tagor Ellis, was arrested in Fort Worth for stealing a mortuary van with a corpse inside. The incident occurred near JPS Hospital when the driver left the van running to retrieve another body. Ellis took the van but abandoned it two miles away near the Fort Worth Zoo. Police, aided by witness statements and zoo surveillance footage, located and arrested her nearby. Ellis faces charges of theft and abuse of a corpse. Authorities are uncertain of her motives or if she knew about the body in the van, which was recovered undamaged.

Police said Valerie Ellis stole a mortuary van from JPS Hospital in Fort Worth. The van was parked and running in front of the hospital while the driver was retrieving a second body.

Woman charged with stealing van with corpse inside from Fort Worth hospital

SUMMARY: Fort Worth Police report that Valerie Ellis, 35, stole a mortuary van with a corpse inside from John Peter Smith Hospital. The van was taken when the driver left it running to retrieve another body. Ellis ditched the van outside the Fort Worth Zoo, two miles away, and was found nearby on foot. Witnesses saw her acting suspiciously and jumping into the van. The corpse and vehicle were unharmed. Ellis was arrested for theft and abuse of a corpse. Her motives remain unclear. She has prior misdemeanor cases in Tarrant and Wise Counties and is being held in Tarrant County Jail.

Around 7 p.m., Fort Worth police received a 911 call from a mortuary transport employee stating he left the transport van running near the ambulance bay while he went inside the hospital. When he came back out, the van was gone.
