Celebrating Galveston Black History| Nia Cultural Center

Published

on

SUMMARY: The Juneteenth gallery at Neoculture Centers commemorates the significance of June 19, 1865, when Union Soldiers arrived in the building next door to announce the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas and other Southern States. This proclamation had been declared two and a half years earlier, but it took soldiers to enforce it. Interestingly, the gallery is located across the street from Texas’ largest slave market. While discussions about the African-American experience in America often focus on slavery and injustice, this gallery aims to tell different stories of hope, resilience, and African-American perspectives. The talented local artists’ works at the gallery serve as a powerful medium to convey these stories. The gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on weekends from 12 to 6 p.m., inviting people to come and witness these remarkable pieces while listening to the lion’s tale.

SUMMARY: The Supreme Court has ruled in favor of maintaining FDA approval for the abortion drug mifepristone, countering challenges from anti-abortion groups. This preserves access to a drug used predominantly in states where abortion remains legal. The court decided anti-abortion doctors lacked legal standing to challenge the FDA's approval. This ruling upholds current regulations, ensuring the drug is available up to the 10th week of pregnancy. However, further legal challenges around interstate regulation of the drug may arise. Additionally, the court faces another significant abortion-related case concerning federal and state power over emergency care regulations.

The Supreme Court issued a major ruling in a case on the FDA's rules for abortion pills. Anti-abortion groups challenged the FDA's approval of Mifepristone. The court sided with the FDA. Good Day talked to law attorney David Coale about the case.
