Texas asks Georgia clinic for transgender youths’ records

Published

SUMMARY: Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is seeking patient records from QueerMed, a Georgia telehealth clinic, concerning minors who received gender-affirming care. This follows a similar request to Seattle Children's Hospital and coincides with Texas' efforts to restrict access to transition-related treatments for transgender youth, which have been banned since last year. The demands have sparked legal action, with Seattle Children's suing Paxton's office. Paxton's requests, part of a wider Republican initiative, have been criticized by advocates as an attack on transgender minors. Texas, among 19 states with such restrictions, also faces legal challenges against its Senate Bill 14 prohibiting certain treatments and surgeries for transgender minors.

Majority House GOP rebuke Phelan, call to ban Democratic chairs

Published

by By Jasper Scherer, The – 2024-05-31 18:38:38

SUMMARY: A faction of 46 Republican House members and nominees has pledged to support only a speaker candidate who will end the tradition of appointing Democratic committee chairs, challenging House Speaker Dade Phelan's stance. To win, a speaker must secure 76 votes from the 150-member House. With Democrats holding 64 seats, a GOP speaker could theoretically win with full Democratic support and some Republican votes. Phelan, already facing opposition due to past actions, may need to abandon Democratic support to maintain a GOP majority. Former GOP lawmaker Ron Simmons and others highlight potential risks if this strategy changes coalition dynamics.

by By Alejandro Serrano, The – 2024-05-31 15:42:46

SUMMARY: Governor Greg Abbott inaugurated a new 80-acre Texas National Guard base in Eagle Pass, part of the state's $11 billion border initiative, with amenities including chef-served dining and individual soldier dorms. The base aims to save $11.5 million monthly on lodging costs for troops currently in temporary housing. Abbott emphasized the base's strategic importance for border security and troop well-being. Critics, like the Eagle Pass Border Coalition, raised concerns about its proximity to industrial sites and lack of investment in local low-income areas. Future construction will expand housing for more troops. Abbott cited ongoing cartel activities as a reason for continued border presence.

Strict rules over delta-8 and delta-9 likely for Texas’ booming hemp industry

Published

by By Karen Brooks Harper, The – 2024-05-31 13:49:12

SUMMARY: Texas state Sen. Charles Perry is addressing issues stemming from a 2019 hemp legislation that unintentionally advanced a psychoactive hemp market in Texas. The legislation allowed the sale of low-dose THC products, leading to a surge in retail cannabis dispensaries. Despite Perry's warnings, the market's lack of regulation led to widespread availability of products enticing to youth and difficult to distinguish from illegal marijuana. The Texas Senate is now considering stricter regulations, including age limits, childproof packaging, and third-party testing. The aim is to better balance medicinal cannabis needs with market safety, amid ongoing debates on legalization and regulation.
