When are they the loudest?
SUMMARY: Billions of cicadas are emerging in Illinois, with two different broods making a buzzing and clicking noise as they look for mates. The high-pitched buzzing can reach up to 100 decibels, but exposure is unlikely to cause hearing loss. The male cicadas make the buzzing sound to attract females using their thoraxes and abdomens. Female cicadas emit a clicking sound from their wings to attract males. The cicadas are loudest on warm, sunny, dry days with calm winds. The periodical cicadas emerge every 13 or 17 years to mate, with cicadas being active above ground for about eight weeks before laying eggs and going underground.
