Biden administration grants protection to hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans, under pressure over border

abc13.com – AP – 2023-09-20 23:06:03

SUMMARY: The Biden administration announced on Wednesday that it would grant temporary legal status to hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans already in the United States, allowing them to work. The move comes as the number of people fleeing Venezuela and other countries to reach the US-Mexico border continues to grow. The Department of Homeland Security plans to grant Temporary Protected Status to an estimated 472,000 Venezuelans who arrived in the US as of July 31, 2023. This decision aims to appease Democratic leaders who have pushed for more support for asylum seekers, but it may draw criticism from Republicans who believe the administration has been too lenient on immigration. The administration also plans to speed up work authorizations for migrants who arrived in the US since January through a mobile app or parole. This move does not apply to those who cross the border illegally and seek asylum. Mayors and governors have been urging the Biden administration to find a way for newly arrived migrants to work legally so that they can support themselves. The increase in the number of migrants attempting to cross the southern border poses a significant challenge for the administration, which has faced criticism from Republicans regarding border control. As a response, the administration is bolstering the number of National Guard and active-duty troops to support Customs and Border Protection staff, and it has also increased removals of individuals found to have no basis to stay in the country.
