Supreme Court strikes down Trump-era ban on bump stocks

SUMMARY: The Supreme Court struck down a federal ATF ban on bump stocks, which were used in the 2017 Las Vegas Massacre, the deadliest mass shooting by a single gunman in U.S. history. The issue was whether ATF had overstepped its authority by reclassifying bump stocks as machine guns. In a 6-3 decision, the Court ruled that ATF cannot rewrite laws passed by Congress. Justice Clarence Thomas argued that bump stocks do not turn semi-automatic weapons into machine guns. The decision highlighted the need for congressional action to regulate such devices, as current ATF authority is limited to specific firearm types.

The Supreme Court on Friday struck down a Trump-era ban on bump stocks, a gun accessory that allows semi-automatic weapons to fire rapidly like machine guns and was used in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
