Supreme Court rejects Arlington man’s challenge to gun law meant to protect domestic violence victim

SUMMARY: The U.S. Supreme Court upheld a federal law prohibiting individuals under domestic violence restraining orders from owning firearms, in an 8-1 decision favoring the Biden Administration. Justice Clarence Thomas was the lone dissenter, expressing concerns over Second Amendment rights. The ruling reversed a previous decision by the federal appeals court in New Orleans. The case involved Zackey Rahimi from North Texas, who violated a protective order by possessing firearms. Chief Justice John Roberts emphasized that historically, individuals posing a threat of physical violence have been legally disarmed. Advocates argue that access to firearms significantly increases the risk of severe harm to domestic abuse victims.

The Supreme Court rejected a challenge from an Arlington man who said federal law preventing people under domestic violence restraining orders from having guns is unconstitutional.

Trump document case dismissed, but far from over

SUMMARY: Just hours before his official nomination, Donald Trump learned that the federal case involving classified documents against him was dismissed. The judge ruled that special prosecutor Jack Smith was improperly appointed. This is a significant short-term win for Trump, although legal analysts believe the case is far from over. The ruling was based on technicalities regarding Smith's appointment and funding by Attorney General Merrick Garland under the Constitution's appointments clause. Legal experts anticipate the federal government will appeal to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, though it's unlikely they'll hear the case before the November election.

Hours before he was officially named the Republican Party's presidential nominee, Donald Trump found out one of his criminal cases was dismissed. Legal experts say the case is far from over.
