When local newspapers shrink or shutter, it leaves a gap in news access that other local news outlets struggle to fill, causing news deserts — communities without reliable local news sources. Texans in news deserts struggle to navigate misinformation and often grow to mistrust the media and other institutions.

On Thursday, May 9, The Texas Tribune hosted “We the Texans: Local news and democracy,” as part of our yearlong initiative examining the state of democracy in Texas. SUMMARY: Houston Independent School District had to close a $450 million budget gap for next year without impacting the classroom. Despite this effort, dozens of teachers and principals are being laid off due to bad budgeting practices, including using emergency relief money for recurring expenses. Teachers are not being let go because of the budget gap, but for other reasons such as performance. The district is confident they can replace the non-renewed educators with trained and experienced staff. The decision-making process for letting go of employees is based on various factors, with notifications already being sent out to those affected.

Expect a lot of teacher turnover this summer in Houston ISD. And more job cuts are coming for other staff, including custodial and maintenance workers.
