by By Stephen Simpson, The – 2024-06-20 15:37:16

SUMMARY: Texas will address its mental crisis by starting seven new psychiatric hospital projects in 2023. Funded by $1.5 billion approved by lawmakers, these facilities will expand the state's nine hospitals and a youth treatment center. Gov. Greg Abbott announced the plans, emphasizing modern mental health care. Major projects include the new Panhandle State Hospital, Lubbock Psychiatric Center, and replacements for Terrell and North Texas State Hospitals. Additional facilities include maximum-security units in Harlingen and San Antonio, and expansion in El Paso. A significant portion of patients are from the prison system, with a rising number found incompetent to stand trial.

SUMMARY: The race to succeed U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee in her Houston district has begun, with former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, state Rep. Jarvis Johnson, and Houston Councilwoman Letitia Plummer among the potential Democratic candidates. Amanda Edwards has also expressed interest but prefers to discuss later. Jackson Lee, who won her Democratic primary earlier this year, passed away from pancreatic cancer on July 19. The Democratic nominee will be chosen by Harris County officials and is expected to win against Republican Lana Centonze, given the district's solid blue history. Gov. Greg Abbott may call a special election to fill the remainder of Jackson Lee's term.
