Scientists: Texas weather extremes likely to become normal

Published

by By Alejandra Martinez and Yuriko Schumacher, The – 2024-07-01 05:00:00

SUMMARY: This year, Texas has faced extreme weather, including wildfires, storms, flooding, tornadoes, and Tropical Storm Alberto. Climate scientists attribute increasing severe weather to rising greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. This has led to more intense and erratic rainfall in the state, with wet areas getting wetter and dry areas experiencing amplified droughts. Experts like Avantika Gori and John Nielsen-Gammon emphasize the impact of warmer temperatures and altered precipitation patterns. Drought in West Texas has also severely affected Rio Grande reservoirs, compounded by delayed water deliveries from Mexico due to their own drought.

SUMMARY: The race to succeed U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee in her Houston district has begun, with former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, state Rep. Jarvis Johnson, and Houston Councilwoman Letitia Plummer among the potential Democratic candidates. Amanda Edwards has also expressed interest but prefers to discuss later. Jackson Lee, who won her Democratic primary earlier this year, passed away from pancreatic cancer on July 19. The Democratic nominee will be chosen by Harris County officials and is expected to win against Republican Lana Centonze, given the district's solid blue history. Gov. Greg Abbott may call a special election to fill the remainder of Jackson Lee's term.

Harris' visit precedes Biden's trip to Austin to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. The convention will discuss significant issues like school budget deficits and teacher pay. Additionally, Harris and AFT have criticized “Project 2025,” a conservative initiative that could drastically alter federal education policies, including eliminating the U.S. Department of Education.

SUMMARY: President Joe Biden will visit Austin next Monday to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 at the Lyndon Baines Johnson presidential library. This will be his first trip to Texas after announcing he would not seek reelection in November. Biden's visit, originally scheduled for July 15, was postponed due to an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. In addition to delivering a speech, Biden was scheduled to attend a fundraiser with Luci Baines Johnson. His visit holds significance as he is the first president to withdraw from reelection since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968.
