Was the San Marcos ‘can ban’ effective over Memorial Day weekend?
SUMMARY: Over the Memorial Day weekend, many visited the San Marcos River in Texas, marking the first with the new “can-ban” ordinance in effect since May 1. The ban prohibits single-use beverage containers within San Marcos city limits and restricts individuals to one 30-quart cooler each. Despite the ordinance, local river advocates noted significant non-compliance, as evidenced by numerous discarded containers collected post-holiday. A San Marcos River advocacy group highlighted the issue on Facebook, emphasizing the need for better adherence. The city plans to focus on education and outreach to ensure compliance over the first year instead of immediate enforcement.
