‘The silent issue’: Texas’ water problem and the path to solutions

SUMMARY: Texas is facing a serious water problem as its population continues to increase while its water supply decreases. The state’s population is expected to grow by 22 million by 2070, while the water supply is projected to decrease by 18%. This has led to a loss of 572,000 acre-feet of water per year, equivalent to filling almost 240 AT&T Stadiums and supplying several cities in Texas. To address this issue, the Texas Water Fund was created, providing $1 billion to fund water projects to produce new water sources for the state. There is also a focus on lowering demand while increasing supply.

FEMA disaster assistance: Federal funding available for some Texas counties after deadly, destructive storm across Houston area

Residents in Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, Polk, San Jacinto, Trinity, and Walker counties may qualify for a $750 payment per household through FEMA’s Serious Need Assistance (SNA) program, in addition to other aid. To qualify, applicants must report displacement or emergency costs related to the disaster. Additional help may be available with a completed FEMA application, identity verification, residence in a declared disaster area, and confirmed damage. Damage from Houston storms: 54 Houston ISD schools closed today due to storm damage and power outages
