Solar storms and climate change get new observer with GOES-U satellite

SUMMARY: NASA is launching the GOES-U satellite, the last in the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites – R Series, to monitor solar activity and Earth’s weather. Scheduled for June 25, 2024, GOES-U will be renamed GOES-19 once operational. It features the Solar Ultraviolet Imager, Extreme Ultraviolet, and X-ray Irradiance Sensors to track solar flares, along with the Compact Coronagraphy-1 for monitoring coronal mass ejections. These space weather events can impact Earth’s power grids and communication systems. Additionally, GOES-U will use its Advanced Baseline Imager and Geostationary Lightning Mapper to enhance weather monitoring, including hurricanes, storms, and atmospheric rivers.
