Police officer hiring increases in US in 2023 – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

SUMMARY: Police departments in the U.S. are reporting an increase in officer ranks since the George Floyd killing and the pandemic-induced exodus. 2023 saw more officers hired than in the past four years, and fewer resignations or retirements. The exodus caused stretched resources, slower response times, and more calls limited to emergencies only. Despite increased hiring, large departments are still below staffing levels from before 2020. Smaller departments have a higher resignation rate and are struggling to compete with larger departments’ pay and incentives. Hiring changes, including visible tattoos and faster background checks, are being considered, but standards should not be lowered. The improved retention is due in part to increased public support after a period of defunding the police.

Harris County crime: 1 juvenile killed, another injured in shooting at northwest Harris County apartment complex, HCSO says

SUMMARY: A juvenile was killed and another injured in a shooting at an apartment building in northwest Harris County. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez reported that deputies responded to the scene where they found two boys shot. One was pronounced dead, while the other was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The relationship between the juveniles and the circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation. Deputies were able to apply a tourniquet to one of the victims. The incident occurred at 2103 Place Rebecca Lane. The investigation is ongoing.

Wildflower Center says great horned owlets now ‘spreading their wings’
