Organization requests reduction in outdoor lighting during spring peak bird migration
SUMMARY: Audubon Texas is urging the State Preservation Board to reduce unnecessary outdoor lighting at the Texas State Capitol during peak bird migration from March to June. Millions of birds migrate through Texas, facing threats from light pollution and building collisions, with dozens of birds being killed or injured in 2023 due to building strikes in Austin. Texas is among the top deadliest cities for birds in the US. Audubon Texas is also running the Lights Out, Texas! campaign, asking residents to turn off excess outdoor lighting during spring and fall migration periods to protect birds.

Round Rock charging non-resident fee for library card
SUMMARY: The Round Rock city council in Texas reinstated fees for nonresidents to obtain a public library card, reversing a decision made in 2015. Nonresidents now have to pay $120 annually for full access to library resources, but can still check out books and participate in programs. The increase in cardholders is straining resources, particularly with books on hold. Residents express frustration with the new fees, especially those who have a Round Rock address but live outside city limits. The library offers a tier structure for nonresidents, allowing them to still access some resources without a fee. Residents must renew their membership every two years, while nonresidents must renew annually.
