Mexico opens tourist train on Yucatan peninsula – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth
SUMMARY: The Mexican president inaugurated the first part of a $20 billion 950-mile tourist train line that runs around the Yucatan peninsula. The unfinished train is meant to connect beach resorts and archaeological sites and will have stops in ten towns. Prices for first runs were listed at $68 for a first-class ticket which caused skepticism. The project has raised concerns about environmental damage and interference with caves that contain some of North America’s oldest human remains. Controversially, the Maya Train project was fast-tracked to bypass normal permitting and approval processes in the name of national security. After a decree issued by President Lopez Obrador in November, Mexico’s armed forces will run the train.
