How hot will it be and will the grid hold
SUMMARY: The Climate Prediction Center forecasts a hotter-than-normal summer across Texas and much of the lower 48 states. Historically, Austin averages 29 triple-digit days per year, but last year saw 80 such days. The Climate Prediction Center bases its predictions on decadal warming trends, with 2011 being the hottest summer on record, recently followed by 2022 and 2023. Meteorologist Kristen Currie attributes this to climate change, which results in more prolonged and intense heat waves. Texas' growing population and rising temperatures raise concerns about the power grid, but recent additions of solar, batteries, and natural gas are expected to help. Additionally, the extreme heat impacts water supply, wildfire risks, and public health.

CapMetro is pausing purchases of new electric buses — here's why
SUMMARY: CapMetro in Austin is pausing new electric vehicle (EV) purchases due to industry-wide battery technology issues. During a June 24 meeting, the CapMetro Board discussed reliance on battery maturity and infrastructure development. Currently, EV buses run for only 8-10 hours before needing a recharge, limiting their usage to 36% of routes. CapMetro's 402-vehicle fleet includes 23 electric buses, with 87 more expected by late 2024. The pause is for transitioning to net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, considering hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell buses. The next EV bus procurement is planned for late 2024, with deliveries by late 2026.

First artificial heart procedure performed in Houston offering new hope for people with end-stage heart disease
SUMMARY: In Houston, Texas, doctors at the Texas Heart Institute at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center performed a groundbreaking procedure by implanting an artificial heart, the BiVACOR Total Artificial Heart (TAH), into a 58-year-old patient with late-stage heart disease. Made of titanium and using magnetic levitation technology, this device aims to keep patients alive until they can receive a real heart transplant. If successful in ongoing trials, it could become a permanent solution. The transplant addresses significant challenges in cardiac care, including long waitlists, and offers new hope for the 26 million people affected globally by heart failure.
