Governor Abbott Announces Departure Of PUC Chairman Lake | Office of the Texas Governor

SUMMARY: Texas Governor Greg Abbott has accepted the resignation of Peter Lake as Chairman of the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC). Lake has served as PUC Chairman since April 2021 and played a key role in implementing bipartisan reforms to the Texas electric grid following Winter Storm Uri. During his tenure, no Texan has lost power due to the state grid, and Governor Abbott has recognized Lake’s service in rebuilding Texans’ trust in the PUC. Lake’s resignation is effective immediately, but he will continue to serve as a PUC Commissioner until July 1, 2023. A new PUC Chairman will be announced soon.

Program successful in reducing Hays County inmate population

SUMMARY: The formation of the Hays County Judicial Services Department has reduced the number of pretrial inmates in the county jail from 83% to 76%. The department works to process recently incarcerated individuals and find alternatives to keeping them in jail before their court date. Despite the decrease, 76% is still high compared to the statewide average. Releasing pretrial inmates has saved the county millions of dollars. Hays County Judge Ruben Bucerra hopes the savings will allow them to stop outsourcing inmates to other jurisdictions. The goal is to help individuals move around in the community and support the community as taxpayers.
