SUMMARY: MLB umpire Ángel Hernández is retiring immediately after a contentious three-decade career, characterized by frequent disputes with players and significant backlash from fans. The 62-year-old, who debuted in 1991, settled to leave Major League Baseball after umpiring thousands of games. Known for controversial calls, Hernández’s reputation worsened with a 2017 racial discrimination lawsuit against MLB, which was dismissed. Fans heavily criticized his decisions, and though well-liked by fellow umpires, his on-field performance often made him a polarizing figure. He last worked a game on May 9, 2023, and cited a desire to spend more time with family as a reason for his retirement.

SUMMARY: CapMetro in Austin is pausing new electric vehicle (EV) purchases due to industry-wide battery technology issues. During a June 24 meeting, the CapMetro Board discussed reliance on battery maturity and infrastructure development. Currently, EV buses run for only 8-10 hours before needing a recharge, limiting their usage to 36% of routes. CapMetro's 402-vehicle fleet includes 23 electric buses, with 87 more expected by late 2024. The pause is for transitioning to net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, considering hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell buses. The next EV bus procurement is planned for late 2024, with deliveries by late 2026.
