Leaky pipes and irrigation runoff responsible for up to 90% of Austin creek’s flow
SUMMARY: Austin’s Waller Creek remains lush due to leaky pipes providing a steady water supply, especially beneficial to Bald Cypress Trees. Research led by University of Texas Professor Jay Banner revealed that up to 90% of the creek’s flow consists of leaking drinking water, wastewater, and irrigation runoff. The study compared the growth of Cypress Trees on Waller Creek and Onion Creek, finding those on Waller Creek thrive even during droughts, benefiting from the consistent water flow. Banner points out that while the leaks have advantages for the trees, the broader implications of water waste must be addressed by local authorities.
