Juneteenth: From Texas Celebration To National Holiday
SUMMARY: This weekend marks the 158th celebration of Juneteenth, an official federal holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in Texas and its importance in American history. The holiday originated in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger announced the end of slavery in Texas. Early celebrations consisted of church services, readings of the Emancipation Proclamation, and picnics. The federal recognition of Juneteenth has contributed to its growth and development, educating communities about the holiday’s historical significance and the meaning of freedom.
