SUMMARY: Opal Lee, a retired school teacher and mother of four from Fort Worth, Texas, walked from her home to Washington D.C to request Juneteenth be made a national holiday. Juneteenth commemorates the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas on June 19, 1865 which declared all slaves forever free. The U.S. Senate passed a bill to make it a federal holiday in June 2021 which was signed into law by President Joseph Biden. Known as “Ms. Opal Walks” the act of walking to raise awareness continues annually to highlight the importance of this holiday for all Americans.

Driver charged with DWI after car plunges off Pier 21 in Galveston, no others found in car

The driver, 21-year-old Caleb Joseph Hayes of Dickinson, escaped and was medically cleared at UTMB Galveston. Hayes was charged with DWI.
