Galveston fatal crash: After deadly DWI wrecks in 2022, data shows police has doubled in drunk driving arrests

SUMMARY: After a deadly drunk driving crash involving a golf cart in , Texas last summer, the Galveston Police Department has made significant changes to prioritize stopping drunk drivers. In response to the crash and two other deadly DWI crashes, the police department started a new traffic enforcement unit dedicated to preventing drunk driving. Since the unit was established, officers have made nearly double the number of DWI arrests compared to the previous year. The police department has also launched a program to help people pay for ride-shares and implemented new technology to streamline the reporting process. Despite some cases being dismissed or dropped, over 120 individuals have been convicted or faced punishment, and approximately 450 cases are still in the system. Two officers have made nearly one DWI arrest every other day since mid-August, and their efforts have been recognized by the city.
