Central Illinois commemorates Juneteenth with Block Parties, History Bus, Bike Ride
SUMMARY: The Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District is hosting its first Juneteenth Block Party at the Illinois Terminal, featuring art, music, poetry, and food. The event is part of several activities celebrating the freedom of enslaved African Americans. The national Black anthem will be sung, and elementary school students' art pieces will be displayed. Juneteenth, now a federal holiday, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in Texas on June 19, 1865. The MTD aims to educate and promote social change by celebrating Juneteenth in an inclusive, community-oriented manner.
