A Wayne County hamlet celebrates its link to Juneteenth

SUMMARY: The childhood home of Major General Gordon Granger, the man who spread the word of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas, has been recognized with a historical marker. Granger, who lived in Joy, New York, helped create the Juneteenth celebration by announcing the freedom of slaves in Texas from a balcony in in 1865. The historical marker was placed outside Granger's childhood home and will be formally unveiled on the Juneteenth holiday.

Woman dies after crews rescue 4 people from house fire on 39th Street in Galveston; 1 firefighter injured

4th cruise terminal complex coming to Port of Galveston
